Miss Glenn County Karlene Shipplehoute  and 2nd Runner Up Rebecca Pendergrass were both present and helped with the event.  Including presenting the frogs for auction and catching them when they escaped.

Peter Carr started as the city manager about a month ago after serving as the city manager for the City of Biggs.   Carr has spent nearly all of his career in private business.  Carr has already started trying to get projects moving to help the city.  Carr is working towards using the new permitting process, which is designed to simplify and make starting business in Orland easier.  It is obvious that attracting business to the community and business development will be a priority for Carr as he tries to rebuild income lost from businesses that have closed or left Orland to conduct business in other cities.

The Orland Town Band will begin at 1:00PM with the Orland Veterans of Foreign Wars presenting the Colors.  The Mayor will speak and the Orland Citizen of the year will be introduced.  The festivities will continue with all the veterans and active duty  service members being recognized.

At 2:00Pm antique car and truck parade will begin. followed by the decorated hat contest and pet parade.  The Orland Soroptomist will sponsor the adult division and the Steve Halsey Family will sponsor the children division.  The Orland Kiwanis will host the decorated bicycle contest with cash prizes for the winners.

The Angus Saint-Evans Family will be sponsoring the favorite for all ages -the egg toss.  Sack races for all ages will also be available for everyone.

The final event for the day will the Frog Jumping contest.  Louie Barletta  will be auctioning the frogs for the contest.  After the event the frogs will be returned home.

The Orland Town Band will begin rehearsals Thursday, Jun 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Orland High School Music Room for the 37th Annual Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration. Anyone wishing to play in the Town Band from 1 – 2 p.m. in Vinsonhaler Park on the 4th of July is more than welcome. Additional rehearsals will be held on June 26, June 28, and July 3. Andrew Hancock will conduct this year’s performance.

There will be plenty of food and fun for everyone in the community beginning at noon on the 4th in beautiful shady Vinsonhaler Park. If there is a non-profit organization that wishes to put in a food or entertainment booth and has not done so in the past, please contact Joanne Overton 530-865-2731 , chair of the Orland Historical and Cultural Society’s 37th Annual Old fashioned 4th of July Celebration.

Black Butte Triathlon racers got to battle the wind this past weekend on a course that several racers refereed to as their favorite.  Everyone living in Northern California had to recognize that it was a little windy this past weekend, but that was just the beginning for the racers.  Black Butte Lake was stirred into a sea of white caps making for a hazardous swim course that had their safety officer working overtime.  After reviewing the course, officials gave the green light to race.

There were people from all over Northern California, along with competitors from the Orland and Chico California.  The ages were just as wide.  There were kids and seniors participating along with the college age athletes.  This sport is open to all ages.

The race has gotten more popular and growing over the last couple years, bringing several hundred people to the Orland area over the course of this two-day event.

This has become a local Saturday morning favorite through the summer.  Whether you want to find your produce & grass-fed beef for the week, fresh ingredients for you weekend cook out of just for a fun morning walk, the Farmer’s Market will fit that need.  There are also locally grown flowers, jellies and other local goods available.  This is a great opportunity to support the local economy and businesses, not to mention the great produce you can get.

I had a small chance to talk to some of the vendors as I was getting a few photographs for folks to see and it sounds like we will get some great produce this year.  Be sure to stop in 9am to 12Pm on Saturday at the Orland Library Park.

Here is a small highlight of some of the produce and products I saw as they were setting up.

Military Service Veterans were honored during a Memorial Day Ceremony at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Orland, California.  Among the speakers was Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones, who recalls his father serving in the military.  Sheriff Jones father is buried nearby with the other veterans in the cemetery.  Every Memorial Day the Veterans place flags on every service members grave in remembrance.   At the conclusion, veterans from each branch of the service raised their services flag, with the  United States Flag being returned to full mast at 12:00, in accordance with Memorial Day tradition.

Miss Glenn County, races on the Orland Speedway and livestock judging highlighted the first day of the Glenn County Fair.  Karlene Shipplehoute, daughter of Doyle and Nora Shipplehoute, is the 2012 Miss Glenn County, taking the position that was held by Jimena Govea. The first and second alternates  were Alison Duckworth and Rebecca Pendergrass.

Scott Batchelder won 1st place in the Sr. FFA Showmanship followed by Cassidy Buttermore in second and Dominic Matteucci in 3rd.  The judging to a long time because of the fine performance by all the participants, but Batchelder remained consistent throughout the performance.

Be sure note to miss the “Eye of the Tiger Show” the tigers that were in the “Hangover.”  Jenny & Ashley Cooke will also be singing.  These young ladies are on the rise in country music and they put on a fun show.

The lighting of the tower signifies changing times for Orland.  In the past, businesses have had to fight with the city to open their doors and then the city did very little to help them.  Members of Orland’s leadership are working with members from Glenn Counties leadership to make the process of opening your business easier.  Mostly this will be done by making the paperwork more compatible with each other and by having people from the business community there to help you.

Orland is becoming more active in seeking people and business to come to Orland.  Our fairground facility is now used throughout the week and will host multiple events on weekends.  Our local sport teams are hosting tournaments that brings several hundred people to our city over the span of a weekend.  Many of our local events, like the Avenue of Lights, draw people to Orland from all over Northern California to our community.  The Orland Art Center draws many people to the community to see the artists and classes they host.  Orland is not a sleepy little town anymore.

Several weeks ago, community leader Gary Campbell got tired of seeing the poor condition of the Swift Adobe Monument in Orland.  After driving past it one afternoon, Gary took a photo of the site and posted it on Facebook.  The Swift Adobe Monument, California State landmark 345, marks the site of the Swift Adobe, the first home in the Orland Ca and Glenn County, making it the oldest historic site in Orland, Ca.  Granville Swift was the first to settle in Glenn County,which became known as Orland. Within a short time many of Gary’s friends were posting their support.  After making sure that the county owned the site and we could clean the site up, the Swift Adobe Clean-up Project was born.

Orland Hardware sold the paint to repaint the bench and R&R Sales bought the paint need and donated the use of their pressure washer fused to clean the monument.  Alta Marie’s Bakery & Soup Shop and the Girl Scouts donated the refreshments for the volunteers cleaning the site.  Mark Rubie, Rubie’s Plumbing donated the use of his tractor and Doc Bogart, Orland Sand & Gravel, brought in a front loader that was used to move concrete debris that has been left at the site. The City of Orland and Ron’s Firewood donated trucks to haul away debris and garbage.

On Sunday, April 22, 2012 a large group of community volunteers descended on the Swift Adobe Monument site and cleaned it up.  The following groups and members were involved int the project: The Orland Volunteer Fire Department, Orland Kiwanis, Orland Rotary, Orland Chamber of Commerce, Orland Historical Society, Boy Scout Troop 114, Tiger Cubs Den 4, Orland Bearcats & Tigers, Orland Moose 1901.

Gary Campbell, the event organizer, was amazed at the help that showed up and wants to make sure that everyone that helped knows they were part of a valuable service and that thank them for their time and service.  Orland residents have always had amazing volunteerism for its community and this event supports vital community value.  Without volunteers, these event would never succeed.
